USGS Spectroscopy Lab
Cassini Mission to Saturn
http://speclab.cr.usgs.gov
The Cassini Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) instrument
is an imaging spectrometer with the following capabilities:
| Specification | VIMS |
|---|
| Wavelength Range | 0.35 - 5.1 microns |
| Number of Channels | 352 (96 Vis, 256 IR) |
| Spectral Sampling | ~7 nm Vis, ~16 nm IR |
| Bandpass (FWHM) | ~7 nm Vis, ~14 nm IR |
| Pixel Size | 0.5 milliradian |
| Spatial Image Size | 64 x 64 pixels |
The VIMS has two optical systems, one for the 0.35 - 1.0 micron
wavelength region, and the second for the 0.86 - 5.1 micron wavelength
region.
The VIMS is a spatial imager with a field of view of 64 by 64 pixels.
VIMS imaging is very flexible: it can be a point spectrometer, obtain
12x12, 1xn images and could obtain continuous swath data of 64 pixels by
N pixels with spacecraft motion. With spacecraft pointing, large images
of hundreds of pixels per side may be obtained.
The 0.5 milliradian field of view
means that VIMS will resolve a 0.5 km spot at a distance of 1,000 km.
By mosaicing multiple fields of view, VIMS will produce images of
Saturn, its rings and moons comparable to and sometimes better than
Voyager images, but with full 352 spectral channels at each pixel. The
spectral range and spectral resolution will allow detailed compositional mapping
of minerals on the satellites and rings of Saturn, and of gases in
Saturn's atmosphere. VIMS will image surface detail on Titan at
infrared wavelengths, cutting through the thick haze which blocks views
of the surface at visible wavelengths.
Thermal vacuum testing proved VIMS is a capable and stable instrument
with no wavelength shifts in any of its modes or as a function of
temperature.
Cassini was launched October 15, 1997 and will arrive at Saturn in July,
2004 after flying by Venus, the Earth and Jupiter.
Launch image (200 K gif)
The Cassini Spacecraft flew by Venus on April 26, 1998 at about 5:45 am
MDT (Earth received the signal about 7 minutes later: 5:52 am MDT).
The flyby altitude was 283.75 km, a value only 0.003% from the targeted
value--that is an error of only about 9 meters!!! Cassini is now
Traveling at over 141,000 km/hour (on April 26, 1998).
The Cassini Spacecraft flew by Venus a second time
on June 24, 1999. Everything went as planned. The VIMS-V
channel obtained data on Venus. Data were downlinked
over the following few days (low gain antena) and received. Everything
looks great.
Cassini flies by Earth August 17, 9:28pm MDT. The VIMS IR covers have
been jetisoned, VIMS IR is cooling down and will take data on the moon
during the flyby. The data will be through the full VIMS instrument
(0.3-5 microns) and throught the solar calibration port in order to
obtain important solar calibration data. The data will be used to
calibrate VIMS measurements at Jupiter and Saturn to reflectance.
At Aug 17, 1999 15:10 UTC (9:10 am MDT) the VIMS IR detector had cooled
to 81.5 Kelvin--excellent. All spacecraft systems are reported nominal.
Cassini Orbit Insertion July 1, 2004 (UT).
Cassini flies by Titan after orbit insertion, and VIMS
obtains this spectacular image.
