Data are taken from "The Galilean Satellites: New Near-Infrared Spectral Reflectance (0.65-2.5 microns) and a .325-.5 micron Summary", Clark and McCord; Icarus, vol. 41, 323-329 (1980). Figure 2, Io Leading. The "reflt" is the geometric albedo scaled to 1.0 at 1.02 microns The error is the standard deviation of the mean. The blue slope: The standard used was the moon (MS2). We believe now, that the moon gives a better point to point correction than stars, especially in the near-infrared out to 2.5+ um, but the slope can be in error, depending on the phase of the moon. So the blue slope could very well be in error. In practice, I believe that if you fit a line to the 0.7-2.5um spectrum, it would be essentially horizontal. Other IR spectra I have seen show a slightly concave curve with a minimum in the 1.5-um region, and the ends at the same level. I do not believe any of the features in the Io cvf data; the spectrum should be considered smooth at CVF resolution. Roger N.
